On Friday I went to a Maths Symposium with Morgan at Mangapapa School. Got some awesome stuff out of it, the first Keynote was mainly about problem solving. Among other things, word problems engage kids in maths without boring them to death with old fashioned 'number problems' all the time!

Some websites to check out for help with making maths fun are:

I wonder how I can use E-ako in the classroom? Will it work on the iPads?

  1. Once you have tried e-ako on the iPads, can you let me know how it goes?

  2. Hi Jono - lucky you for the maths pd. I am really enjoying teaching maths. If you find any great ideas for teaching fractions I'd love to hear them pls., resources, etc., will be graciously received.
Your link for nrich doesn't seem to work and comes up with that dreaded 404 complaint.
Thx for your info on Maths on Tues. You said that the maths books weren't meant to be followed sequentially, have they changed from the 'once a student has mastered this they then go on to...' ? (not exact words but that's the gist).
Oh, and I tried e-ako maths on my iPad but to no avail. Maybe the powers that be will create an app as well???

    1. You need to copy and paste the links Carol, I don't think I put it in there right so you can't just click on them.

E-Ako works on our ipads in the classroom so they should work on yours as well! Kids love it :)

It's not so much "if they have mastered this then they go on to this" it's more like "where's a hole in their maths? What do they need to do to plug it?" "Now that we've plugged that, what do they need plugged next?"

I use these to help me http://www.nzmaths.co.nz/planning-sheets?parent_node= because they have all the LO's and understanding that each exercise is giving the students. That way you can pick and choose certain lessons based on the needs of the kids.
